POKOTABI / Ties
TIES
Near Yushima Tenmangu, Ties pairs meticulous, slow-extracted nel drip coffee with polished house-made pastries, including seasonal tarts, Mont Blanc, and shortcakes, in a hushed, contemplative room.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step inside Ties and the first thing you encounter is a glass display case lined with sculpted, house-made cakes. Located along Kasuga-dori near Yushima Tenmangu, this understated cafe focuses on two things: single cups of nel drip coffee extracted drop by drop through flannel filters, and hand-finished confectionery. The dimly lit interior balances counter and table seating, where patrons keep their voices down to a whisper, lending the room a tranquil quiet as they focus on what sits before them.
The coffee is brewed exceptionally strong, using a generous dose of ground beans and an exacting, droplet-style pour. The signature Original roast leads with dark-roast depth and rounded bitterness, joined on the menu by single-origin offerings such as Yemen Mocha and Kilimanjaro—each sip dense, aromatic, and lingering softly on the palate. Beyond filtered coffee, the drink list also features loose-leaf tea, tiered glasses of iced au lait glacé, and soothing bowls of hot café au lait.
The shop's seasonal cakes provide an ideal foil for such concentrated brews. A classic Mont Blanc rests on crisp meringue, layering chestnut cream lightly scented with Western spirits over an inner whole astringent-skin chestnut; paired with black coffee, both coffee and dessert gain sharper definition. Strawberries or figs top tender sponge and light fresh cream in their shortcakes, while blueberry cheese tarts strike a crisp, tangy note, and meringue chantilly pairs airy sweetness with whipped cream—all bearing the hallmarks of precise French-style technique.
The cakes are equally sought-after for takeout, and choices frequently dwindle or sell out entirely by late afternoon. Those hoping to choose from the full display case do best by arriving shortly after opening or during the early afternoon.
